Virtual Reality Homework - 8 : Analysis of Roto VR

After reading about Roto VR from the presenters webpage and attending the presentation I started to analyse about it as I found it to be good improvement in VR technology. Considering the points from the presentation webpage and other websites about Roto VR I made few observations and analysis about it. The following are my views and understanding about Roto VR. I tried comparing it with the points discussed about collaboration and interaction in class.

Roto VR is one such technology which actually wherein it limits the use of VR to only those things which we can do while sitting. Though it suits the best for few applications like car racing, flying games, relaxation games, watching a virtual reality movie or a 360-degree movie etc. But the applications are very limited and the scope of this is very less and reach out of such tools or hardware will be not growing as at a point it gets to an end as there would be no future use of it. I want to discuss roto VR because it has many pros but at the same time, it has many cons as well.

Roto VR makes the interaction easy as you are always seated. Collaboration would be sometimes difficult as we are on chair and when someone tries to invade our personal space we tend to move but as we are in the chair we cannot move. As discussed an example in class where sometimes people move from walls and it looks very mysterious for us, it happens that as we are in a fixed position we cannot avoid such things to happen. If we were at least set to be free motion we could avoid such things but as being in a single position it becomes difficult.

Pedals at the foot for the movement detection.

As the chair is fixed and we have people with different personalities this may be a bit difficult to use for some people. The company describes that roto VR chair rotates based on the leg movement on the stand attached to the chair in some cases but there could be people who cannot reach out to the stand.

Flying Game snap from demo video

Roto VR is best suited for things like a car or flying games, as we sit on this chair and also as we sit in the game as well we can experience the best possible reality view. As the chair is cable-less we need not worry about wires and any other obstacles.

Gravitational Sensors attached with the chair

The company also claims that we can feel the gravitational feel while we are on the chair, this can be used to make our experience the best as this won't be possible in normal VR, this immerses the person completely into the virtual environment. Though this is a big advantage for the technology it could also be a con as few people may get motion sickness because of this. The continued rotation caused by this cair also affects the person physically as once we come out of the virtual world we sometimes still feel the effects which can actually cause the sickness.

Integrating other devices

One of the most interesting features is that we can integrate other devices which we need for enhancing our experiences like a steering wheel or a gun or whatever, This makes us feel much more realistic and immersive.I could figure our few advantages and disadvantages of this technology which are listed below.

Advantages:-

  • The best part is that it turns around as the graphics of the game does. With this, the user experiences actual movement so the feeling of the nausea is reduced which is actually experienced in wand based navigation.

  • Free rotation of 360 degrees and aim in any direction irrespective of your position.

  • Attaching other gadgets to the chair to experience the VR to the fullest.

  • Works with all VR headsets,

  • Option to mount computer system on the chair.

Disadvantages:-

  • Discomfort for people who overfit or underfit in the chair.

  • Rotation can cause problems once the user comes out of the virtual world as he can still feel it.

  • Sound disturbance from the rotation of chair is said to be heard by the users which could actually disturb the users as they are in virtual world
